Calabria
in a nutshell The regional capital is Catanzaro.
The toe of Italy's boot is a remote and poor
region still little-known to tourists. The area offers a memories of more illustrious
times over two thousand years ago when Calabria was part of Magna Graecia, a rich
and powerful Greek colony. The famous Riace
bronze statues, found and recovered from the sea is now in the Museo Nazionale
of Reggio di Calabria. The area is mountainous
and full of remote villages and the region's larger towns are mostly modern and
unappealing. Some curiousities are the Greek-speaking
villages, and an Albanian community which is dating back five hundred years. Calabria
has 780km of coast, facing onto two seas, the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian. Alternative
airports are: Calabria has two airports, one
at Reggio (this one) and another at Lamezia
Terme. For international flights the more useful airports are Naples
and Palermo as these are connected
by train to Calabrian destinations. Italy
