Pisa
in a nutshell Pisa was the birthplace of the
founder of modern physics, Galileo Galilei. It is still the seat of an archbishopric;
it has become a light industrial centre and a railway hub. It suffered repeated
destruction during World War II. Known best
probably for it's famous Leaning Tower which is but one of many architecturally
and artistically important structures. A lot of these are around the city's Campo
dei Miracoli or "Field of Miracles", to the north of the old town. Incidentally
the social center is also in the north around the Piazza Garibaldi, just off the
the Ponte di Mezzo (Middle Bridge). Up market
shops and cafes are to be found on the Borgo Stretto - these may require deep
pockets. Back to the Campo dei Miracoli, where
you find the beautiful Duomo (the Cathedral), the Baptistry and the Camposanto
(the monumental cemetery). If you look carefully there are also some small small
bell towers (campaniles). No, there is nothing
wrong with your eyesight - nearly all buildings or part of them are at a slight
angle. Not unusual if one builds on sand and on a disappeared river bed. More
