| The
Ostrava region is a part of the country, which has many historical, cultural and
technical places of interest and sights, with a variety of sport and recreation
centres, many tracks for hiking and biking in the nearby mountains and lots of
opportunities for leading a rich cultural and social life. Ostrava, the major
city of the region, was founded at the junction of the rivers Ostravice and Lucina
in the 13th century. It is the entry point into the so-called Moravian Gate, through
which trade routes used to lead from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean. The
discovery of coal in 1763, resulted in the expansion of coal, metal, machine and
chemical industries in the 19th century, followed by growth of the population
in the beginning of the 20th century. Presently, Ostrava is the third largest
city in the CR, as to the number of inhabitants.
