Kaunas
in a nutshell Kaunas
may be Lithuania's second city, but for architecture, fun and basketball, it plays
second to none. There first thing on everyone's
mind in Kaunas is basketball. The team, Zalgiris (Lithuanian Champions 2005),
is and has for some time been the pride of the country.
As relaxed and low key as Kaunas can be, you can witness the city's temper change
if you visit during hoop season, which seems to go on for about nine months or
so... basically because it is the only sport anyone really cares about. Kaunas
second obsession is a good party after a match so there is no shortage of bars,
restaurants and clubs to keep the parties fresh and invigorating. Not
sporty? - Kaunas is perhaps best known for its main pedestrian throughfare - Laisves
aleja - as well as being home to many of the city's fine hotels, bars and restaurants,
is a virtual catwalk for the younger set and a shopper's paradise by Lithuanian
standards. Follow Laisves from end to end
and you will end up on Vilniaus Street which and the impressive and fairly restored
Old Town where buildings date back to the 16th century.
Cellar bars and restaurants, museums and shops surround the square, making it
an ideal location to relax and experience old Kaunas. Here
