Here is a taste of Heraklion specifically if you have
a day or two to spare. With kind permission this excerpt is taken from Cretetravel.com
a resource we can highly recommend ...why
not take the time and spend a day or two in Heraklion the main city and business
center of Crete which is also a major cruise destination. Beyond the crazed progress
of moped riders, noisy scooters and a battered, out-of-control look to the city,
there is much to do and plenty of things worth seeing. Apart from shopping and
the designer clothes on Daedalou Street ("DaydAloo"), there are many small shops
off all the main streets which sell those local products which normally are used
when you live in Crete. Just have a look along 1866 Street and even more so its
side streets. Here you may find curio distinctly different from more typical "gifts"
offered to visitors in gift shops. If you have heard of the famous Saturday market
that was by the port this now has been moved to an obscure suburb........ To
rent a car and just get lost on the island is a great way to experience Crete
for real an the live away from the hustle and bustle of tourism. The
editors personal experience is that even in high season avoiding the tourist hot
spots the friendly Crete people will find a room for you to spend the night and
their recommendation of where and what to eat is second to none. Just don't get
me started on the wine........ |
