Bologna
in a nutshell Bolognas origin starts as an
Etruscan town, and relics of the town's early phase of development can be seen
in the town's Museo Cïvïco Archeologico. Bologna is a nice, red-brick
city with plenty of palazzi. One of Bologna's defining features for the last thousand
years has been its university, the oldest in Europe. A lot of buildings and museums
that dominate the town's historic centre are legacies of this heritage. When there
was a shortage of rooms for the university's students, the solution was to build
porticoes over the streets, thus extending the houses above to create more accommodation.
Today these sweeping porticoes are a striking feature and are a part of the town's
distinctive architecture. Still a student town, Bologna is lively and entertaining.
Bologna has a great local bus network. You'll
need to buy tickets in advance at bus offices, new kiosks or tobacconists, and
then validate them in the machines on board the buses. Check the tourist information
for value tickets which combine transport and museum. From
Bologna's railway station -Stazione Centrale- frequent trains run to most big
cities. The bus station is close to this and has many services to local destinations
like Modena, Ferrara, Sienna and Ravenna. Here
