Newcastle Airport by Car
From the north
The A1 road network gives travellers fast access to Newcastle Airport from the North.
An alternative route to the A1 is the A68/A696 which provides a shorter journey from Edinburgh to Newcastle Airport.
Also recent upgrades to the A74 between Glasgow and Carlisle now make the journey to Newcastle Airport even easier.
Below is an indication of the approximate drive times to and from the following city centres:
Edinburgh: 2 hours
Glasgow: 3 hours
From the south
Traffic on the A696 dual carriageway to the Airport flows freely and the region's Metro system feeds directly into the Airport.
The A1 road network gives travellers fast access to Newcastle Airport. The A1 by-passes Newcastle City Centre as it connects with the upgraded A696 direct to the Airport.
Below is an indication of the approximate drive times to and from the following city centres:
Newcastle: 15 minutes
Darlington: 1 hour
Leeds: 2 hours
York: 2 hours
Sunderland: 45 minutes
Manchester: 3 hours
Durham: 45 minutes
From the west
Traffic on the A696 dual carriageway to the airport flows freely and the region's Metro system feeds directly into the Airport.
The A69 links with the A1 and then the A696, again giving dual carriageway access.

Carlisle: 1.5 hours
By Metro / Rail
The Metro fast transit system is the most convenient way of travelling to the Airport from anywhere within Tyne and Wear, including the city centres and mainline railway stations at Newcastle and Sunderland
The Airport Metro station is immediately adjacent to the passenger terminal.
The journey takes 23 minutes from Newcastle Central Station and services are provided up to every 7 minutes.
Travel to the Airport from either Newcastle or Sunderland city centres costs �2 single and �3 return (�3.80 at peak periods).
Visitors seeking unlimited travel for one day can by tickets costing from �3.40 for one day (off-peak), and from �8.80 for one week.

Newcastle Central station is a principal mainline station on the Great North East Railway line with direct services from London and Scotland.
